Bodaboda operators in Thika Sub County were taken through a free driving lesson on Wednesday evening in Thika town, Kiambu County.
The event which was funded by the county's Constituency Development Fund (CDF) was meant to enlighten the bodaboda operators about traffic rules and regulations to minimise road accidents in Thika Super highway.
According to Ephraim Njihia, CDF committee chairman, the county government has disbursed Ksh 200,000 to benefit 40 bodaboda operators and each of them was given Kshs5000 to cater for their license and sit for a test to assess their knowledge of the rules.
“The fee is not for the cyclist to pocket but they should have their license stamped and at least sit for an examination on road traffics to understand the rules better,” Njihia said.
Benedict Mwangangi, Thika West traffic boss extended his gratitude to the County government for the initiative noting that road accidents are caused by unlicensed motorists and untrained cyclist in the area.
“I want to thank the county government for the drastic measures of equipping the cyclist with knowledge about traffic rules which they rarely observe,” Said Mwangangi.
Mwangangi cautioned the bodaboda operators that after the training they should observe traffic rules and teach the new members since the law will be tough on motorists who do not follow the rules.
Speaking to the press, Moses Ndirangu, a cyclist, also appreciated the area MP Alice Ng’ang’a for training them which he said will greatly reduce petty road accidents.
He added that for an untrained cyclist like him it will ensure they have a great opportunity to learn and observe traffic rules for the safety of not only them but the customers as well.
