Normal transport activities were disrupted on Saturday morning, following a demonstration by boda boda operators, who were protesting against increasing accidents involving their colleagues, with the latest being a hit and run accident on Friday evening.

The boda boda operators, operating in and around Machakos town, blocked the main road leading from the town to Kangundo, which forced vehicles using the same road to divert to other shortcuts.

Speaking during the demonstrations in Machakos town, the chairman of the boda boda association Allan Musembi, condemned the driver who committed the act and disappeared, further explaining that the area had led to loss of lives of their colleagues.

“It has been a series of losing our colleagues because of irresponsible drivers. Last week, one of us was hit and he sustained severe injuries. Last month, another person died five kilometres from here and if nothing is done, more lives will be lost,” said Musembi.

The operators however blamed the re-occurring accidents on lack of bumps in the area to slow down the speeding vehicles.

“We want bumps to be built along this road on specific areas including near Garden entrance, College road and near Machakos girls’ school,” said Musembi.

The operators have further demanded to be addressed on the issues by the leaders representing the area.
