A terrible traffic jam along the Nairobi - Mombasa Road after two lorries were involved in road accident caused travellers to spend the night in traffic on Sunday.
The accident occurred at Small World Hotel, a few meters from the junction to Daystar University, Athi River Campus on Sunday evening.
The jam that lasted the whole Sunday night and most part of Monday morning saw motorists stuck after the two vehicles barricaded the busy highway.
According to Joseph Lodengo, an eyewitness, a track ferrying sand from Machakos town headed towards Nairobi hit another truck that was getting to the highway from the Small World Hotel blocking the road.
The second truck belongs to China Roads and Bridges Company and was hit on the driver’s side.
It took several hours for the lorries which were badly damaged to be removed and towed to the Athi River Police Station. The jam started clearing on Monday at midday.
Motorists plying the highway were forced to wait until the road was cleared since there was no possible diversions to be used by them as alternative routes due to heavy night's down pour.
There were no casualties reported from the accident though passengers counted great losses after spending several hours away from their homes and businesses.
Bodaboda operators operating around that area said they made lots of profits as they worked the whole night and part of yesterday morning due to the accident before the road was cleared.
