This comes barely a week after a rider died while racing with a colleague.

The residents who were speaking on Tuesday during a requiem mass of the deceased asserted that such cases might be on the rise if no action is taken against irresponsible riders

The two, who were reportedly competing for a prize of Sh1,000, engaged in a street race along the Thogoto-Gikambura Road on Wednesday night where one of the speeding racers lost control and rammed into a culvert sustaining serious injuries that led to his death.

Shocked villagers who witnessed the incident have faulted the area administration for laxity in taming insanity among the riders.

“There are reports that these races have been going on for some time. They place the bet on just Sh1,000, a meagre amount that has cost the life of a young man. Most riders plying this route are known to be notorious and flout every traffic rule. We should not lose our children to this menace,” Susan Nyambura, a relative of the deceased said.

Cases of accidents involving bodaboda riders have increased, particularly along this route, which is mostly served by bodabodas due to the scarcity of public vehicles.

“The bodaboda business has employed many youths but this should not be left to be the next deathbed for them. Almost every week, we have a case or two of bodaboda accidents. Therefore, we need to address this issue before it gets out of hand,” James Muchoki, another resident said.
