A bodaboda operator in Kikuyu died on Wednesday morning while his passenger is in hospital after they were hit by a lorry.
The accident occurred along the Kikuyu Southern bypass.
According to an eyewitness, Noel Maina, the bodaboda operator was on the wrong as he joined the road without considering oncoming vehicles.
Maina added that when he the rider joined the road from a pavement, the lorry was in high speed and it hit the motorcycle on the front. He added that the bodaboda operator was hit on the head and he died instantly.
He added that the passenger was slightly hit and he was dragged with the motorbike wreckage, breaking his arms and legs.
Good Samaritans rushed the passenger to Kikuyu Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident at the scene, Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said that the bodaboda operator was ignorant of road safety measures.
He added that both the operator and the passenger had no helmets.
Maweu added that the lorry that hit them did not stop which was wrong.
“Such lives being lost is unfortunate. The deaths could be avoided if road users maintain safety measures while using the road,” said Maweu.
He urged the bodaboda Sacco chairmen to ensure those in the Saccos qualify by having all the requirements to use the road.
Maweu, however, warned passengers of using bodaboda that did not have protective gears such as helmets.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Kikuyu Hospital Mortuary.
