A bodaboda rider was on Monday afternoon run over by a speeding lorry along the Garissa - Madogo road.

According to preliminary investigations, the accident happened when the motorbike rider tried to overtake the lorry on a corner when an oncoming vehicle forced him to try and return back to his lane but was too late.

The lone rider, who was identified as Benjamin Maluki, 30, was said to have been heading to Madogo trading centre to buy petrol for his brother’s motorbike.

According to Yussuf Daru, an eyewitness, the driver dragged the body on the tarmac road for about 10 metres but the motorbike got stuck beneath the lorry and snapped about 100 metres from the point of impact.

“I was seated outside by homestead when I saw an over speeding lorry from Garissa following closely the motorbike. In a split second, I had a screeching sound. I ran towards the lorry and tried to stop the driver but he sped off,” Yussuf said.

A search team comprising of private vehicles, traffic police officers from Garissa and bodaboda riders joined the chase and the lorry was found at a seasonal river about 5 km from the scene.

The body was removed by police and taken to the Garissa Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and postmortem.
