The 95 bodaboda riders whose five-day trip to Rwanda caused a storm in Kisumu returned to the country saying they would use lessons learnt in Kigali to curb the high number of road accidents blamed on them.

The programme coordinator Nelson Odire said they went on a bench-marking trip which exposed them to diverse ways of improving motor bike safety riding in the county.

"In Rwanda, riders are well trained on road safety and no one is allowed to ride a bike without conforming to the set rules," he said.

"They have to put on helmets and reflector jackets so that in case of an accident their heads are safe and during rainy seasons and at night motorists can spot them easily."

Odire challenged the county government to come up with bodaboda safety regulations to guide the smooth operation of the fast emerging alternative means of transport.

The bikes' usage within and outside Kisumu town has increased at unprecedented levels overtaking matatus in short distance travel because of cheap fares.

Odire asked members of the County Assembly to move with speed to draft legislations that will also harmonise transport within the lakeside shopping district.
