The search for bodies belonging to five people who drowned in Enziu river has been intensified after Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi hired private divers.
The victims who included a student from Machakos Boys High School and four other occupants of a probox car drowned in the river two weeks ago after they were swept by flood waters following the ongoing heavy rains in the region.
The student, a young man, was swimming in the river when the tragedy befell him while the car's occupants were traveling to Nuu from Nairobi city to attend a burial ceremony.
The divers' efforts have, however, bore no fruits after the four days fruitless search.
The deceased families have urged the government to do everything possible to ensure bodies of their kins are retrieved.
Leaders and residents have camped at the river in Mwingi, Kitui County to foresee the bodies' retrieval.
Mulyungi castigated the government for failing to respond to his calls of reinforcement to aid in the retrieval.
"It's sad that the government is ignoring it's people at a time like this when the situation need emergency intervention," Mulyungi said.
He questioned why immediate measures were taken when the deputy county commissioner's vehicle was carried away by floods last week but the government hasn't responded to the family who's four kins bodies are still missing.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has promised to send an excavator to scoop sand in the river to make it easy for the removal of the bodies.
Ngilu is set to arrive at the scene to asses the situation.
