The body of a drunken middle aged man who slipped and fell as he tried to cross river Tayari in Molo Sub County has been retrieved.
The man allegedly fell and drowned in the river on Monday night after spending hours drinking with friends. His body was retrieved on Tuesday after family members reported his disappearance.
According to residents, the deceased was a habitual drinker who often left the drinking spree late in the night.
Musa Kariuki said that they departed with the deceased at 7.30 in the evening only to get reports that he did not reach his house.
“We were with him the whole day (Monday) and parted ways late in the evening,” he said.
The body was traced to the river after the sandals of the deceased wore were found close to the river.
However, efforts to retrieve the body quickly were hampered by the high water levels in the river.
The body was taken to the Molo district hospital mortuary as residents urged the sub county administration to construct a permanent bridge across the river.
James Lesiyiot said that the river poses a greater danger especially to school going children who use it daily.
“We want to ask leaders in this are to construct a permanent bridge to save us the agony of seeing our people perish in this river,” he said.
The residents also asked leaders in the area to crackdown on makers and sellers of illicit alcohol that are causing the deaths of young men.
