The body of Samuel Kaja, 39, was spotted floating in Rungiri dam and retrieved by Kikuyu police assisted by the area residents.

Area assistant chief Peter Njoroge who was at the scene of the incident said the death of the driver was a case of suspected suicide.

“This dam is used severally by people who want to take their life or criminals who find it as a suitable spot for dumping bodies,” said Njoroge.

A resident of Rungiri, Charity Nyawira added that annually at least 60 bodies are recovered from the dam but the government did nothing to fence it despite the numerous deaths.

“This dam is an open danger for the locals. We have people who take their lives here by drowning and others dumped inside by criminals. We only spot bodies floating and even some have their hands tied, which shows they were killed,” Nyawira said.

The residents said they would make an appeal through the area deputy county commissioner's office to have the dam fenced to make it inaccessible.

The dam was created during the construction of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as it was a quarry where stones for construction were dug out. Later, water sprung from underground and filled the quarry making it a dam.
