The body was found on Wednesday evening at Nanga village in Gatanga, Muranga County, partly buried in an abandoned pit latrine.

According to villagers, the body was discovered by one man who was looking after his cattle. He wrote a note and pinned it in a nearby shopping center which was found by curious locals at around 8pm Wednesday.

The decomposing body of Edward Mburu was later retrieved after youth were mobilized to help in the exercise.

Officers from the Makongeni Police Station who drove to the scene of crime confirmed the incident, saying that the body of the deceased bore multiple head injuries, probably as a result of knife stabs.

His eyes were also said to be gorged out and the body wrapped in an old canvas tent. The villagers suspect that the tent is owned by one of the suspects' mothers who has already been put in police custody.

“Very many people here know that because it is what the suspect's mother uses to dry cereals,” explained one villager, as quoted by Thika Today.

The villagers said that the suspect and his mother regularly go to the area in search of grass and firewood.

It is alleged that the mother and his son spent more than two hours outside in the dark on the material night, before she came back to the house. The woman's husband claims to have heard someone scream about three times but later all went silent.

After a while, the wife came and requested him to drive a vehicle into the compound, claiming that it belonged to his son. When he questioned who was that had screamed, the wife said the noises came from some drunk youth heading home after a drinking spree at one of the local pubs.

Sensing danger, the husband is said to have sneaked back to the house and locked himself from inside.

The woman has now gone into hiding while her son is still being grilled by police to assist in further investigations.

The deceased's body has been taken to General Kago Funeral Home, Thika.
