Speaking in Manyatta, director Keino said that even though water from the pipes is already treated, residents should also make an effort to treat just to be sure they are safe.

“Water from the local supplier is already treated, however it passes through many places and you never know what happens to it therefore, it is wise to do home treatment just to be on the safer side,” said Keino.

Keino said that simple treatment methods such as boiling water can go a long way in saving families from going through the agony of seeking treatment in case of water borne diseases.

“Currently, we have cases of cholera being reported in different parts of the country, as we know cholera is a quick killer, if you cannot afford chemicals for treating water then just boil it,” added Keino.

He was overseeing the distribution of water filters to Manyatta locals. The filters which were distributed to each household filters water in addition to treating it.

Keino however, challenged the Kisumu County government to ensure that all residents have access to clean water.

“County governments should treat those in informal settlements equally as those in leafy suburbs. You will find that people in slums suffer getting water as compared to others others living in well constructed houses, homes,” claimed Keino.

Water for Life is a Non-Governmental Organisation that promotes the use of clean water to different households across the country.
