Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett has defended the force over allegations of being partisan when dealing with riots and demonstrations.

Speaking in an interview on NTV Sunday, Boinett maintained that his officers react equally depending on the force ant threat imposed by demonstrators without putting into consideration their political allegiance.

''We as the police do not play any role in the political arena and are therefore always fair when carrying out our activities. We only respond based on the reaction from the other side,'' said the IG.

He further called for calm over a recent video clip showing anti-riot police assaulting students from the University of Nairobi.

Boinett said that the matter is under investigation and officers found culpable will not escape unpunished.

He, however, maintained that the same is a very sensitive issue calling upon the nation to give his office and all the other involved institutions enough time so as to not to victimize innocent officers.

''We are still investigating the situation after viewing the footage and any officer found culpable of having been involved in this we will definitely take disciplinary actions,'' he said.
