Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Wednesday refused to comment on the push for the secession of the Coast region. Boinnet said he is not ready to be dragged into the debate, which is being spearheaded by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, The Star has reported. The police boss refused to speak on the matter during the launch of the newly acquired six police patrol boats at the Port of Mombasa. On his part, Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe said the two governors want to use the debate to remain relevant in the political arena after their terms end in 2022. Kiraithe said the two governors are allowed to push for any agenda but not secession because it is divisive."Anything which can be done under the law is okay but secession is totally diversionary and has a political agenda," said Kiraithe, as quoted by the local daily.Kiraithe remarks come after Joho and Kingi defied calls by foreign envoys to drop the campaign. The two have maintained that they will push for self-rule.
