Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, has dismissed claims that police are harassing Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's friends and family members just to get back at him.
This comes after Joho, alongside Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mvita), Suleiman Dori (Msambweni) and several MCAs on Friday stormed the urban police station in Mombasa to demand the release of their ally.
The governor later said they were detained at the Coast Police Headquarters over alleged obstruction of arrest charges, reports which Boinnet denied.
Boinnet has said the governor's ally, Aharub Khatir, was arrested after being linked to a motor vehicle syndicate in Mombasa and London.
Police said they raided Khatir's home and business premises to search for evidence following several complaints, the Standard reports.
"We don't just arrest. It is not political as they are trying to show. There are complaints and serious ones, hence the probe," said Boinnet, as quoted by the daily.
Khatir, who runs a licensed gun shop in Mombasa, was later released on a Sh20,000 bail.
