The Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet has directed police officers to impound all Probox, Sienta and Wish vehicles found carrying passengers without PSV licenses.
This is after matatu owners complained that the number of vehicles operating as public service vehicles is increasing, which is hurting their genuine businesses.
Addressing the National Delegates Conference of the matatu owners association(MOA) at the KICC, Boinnet said the vehicles are hurting kenyans as they lack necessary insurance and speed governors.
"They cause accidents. Kenyans die and others are maimed but they cannot be compensated because these vehicles do not have PSV insurance," Boinnet said on Wednesday.
The IG and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) deputy CEO Michael Mubea urged the operators to stop giving bribes to traffic police officers.
“It takes two to tango, so when you give bribe you are also committing and offense and you should be arrested alongside the officer,” said Boinnet.
He added that the government intends to introduce new traffic rules to restore sanity on the roads and eradicate rampant cases of bribery among traffic police.
