Governors will no longer use police chase cars in their day-to-day operations, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has said.
In a letter addressed to all regional county commanders, the police chief said disciplinary measures will be taken against any officer who will ignore the directive.
"The police headquarters has noted with a lot of concern that police vehicles and police officers are escorting county government officials across the country and sometimes clearing roads for them at the expense of inconveniencing other road users," Boinnet said the letter.
"This must never occur again."
He also took a swipe at government officials who disobey traffic rules and use the wrong side of the road.
"Besides the presidency all other protocols regarding chase cars and escorts are done as directed be the ministry of foreign affairs," he added as quoted by the Star online.
This comes at a time the national government is at loggerheads with some governors.
On Friday, the government withdrew the bodyguards of governors Hassan Joho (Mombasa) and Amason Kingi (Kilifi).
This happened a day after Mr Joho lectured President Uhuru Kenyatta over what he called neglecting Coast region in development.
On Saturday, Coast ODM leaders addressed a press conference and gave Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nakaissery a two-day ultimatum to restore the two governor's security detail.
