Raw sewage dumped into a river. [Photo/Simba N Joseph]The residents of Kisii county have pleaded with the local government through the Department of Energy, Water, Environment, and Natural Resources headed by CeC Skitter Ocharo and the Gusii Water and sewerage company (GWASCO) to deal with the raw sewage flowing into rivers. The most affected residents of the county include people from Bonchari villages and traders at the Daraja Mbili market who depend on the water from the river at bridge camp area along Kisii-Kisumu road which is now highly polluted by raw sewage. According to traders at Daraja Mbili they mostly depend on the water to wash their products while farmers in Bonchari depend on it to water their plants. The sewage that many alleged that it flows from the Kisii Level 6 hospital has made the area around Daraja Mbili inhabitable because of the strong stench emanating from the once clean river. There are also fears that children may soon contract disease given that some used to swim in the river, hence locals from Kisii township and Bonchari have asked GWASCOto act with speed by repairing the broken sewage pipes for the safety of the community. #KisiiTalk
