Tanzania is viewed as one of the few countries in East and Central Africa that have taken the music industry to the next level. However, Tanzanian artiste Hussein Jibril, popularly known as Chupa Moja, has decided to move from Dar es Salaam to Mombasa, in search for greener pastures.Speaking during an interview with this writer, Chupa Moja said competition in the Tanzanian music industry is high unlike in Mombasa and Kenya as a whole, where he said artistes seem not to appreciate the opportunities they have.“Yes we have quality studios in Tanzania but you can imagine how many artistes are there compared to Mombasa. I visited almost all studios in Dar es Salaam but since I am not yet famous, no one listened to me,” said Chupa Moja. The 25-year-old upcoming musician, who will now be residing in Mtwapa, said his main focus will be to look for a good studio in Mombasa when he can re-brand himself as a Kenyan artiste and shed off the ‘bongo’ tag.“I went to Jungle Masters Studios and met with their producer Emmy Dee. He is a good guy. I am also looking for dancers,” he said.Several artistes from Mombasa including Chikuzee and Fat S have traveled to Tanzania to hold meetings with big names in the industry.Earlier in the year, Kide Kide hit maker Dazla Kiduche met with Diamond Platinumz at his WCB studios, though the two did not do collaboration as fans had expected.Chupa Moja, who recorded three songs while in Tanzania, said he believes he will grow his music career here in Kenya, despite the perception that bongo music performs better.“The challenge I am facing now is how to get a nice person who will manage me. It is very hard to make it in music without a manager,” he added.
