The Boni community in Lamu County has raised concern over closure of schools in county amid security concerns. According to The Star, all the schools in the five villages in the terror-prone area have remained closed after teachers refused to report to work since 2014.The affected villages are Milimani, Basuba, Mangai, Mararani and Kiangwe. Boni elders, led by Basuba Chief Yusuf Nuri on Monday faulted the teachers for not reporting to work over security concerns, saying that the situation is slowly returning to normalcy. The elders reminded the teachers of the need to sympathise with the students as the operation Linda Boni which is aimed at flushing out al-Shabaab militants continues. They also challenged the government to find a way of getting teachers to report to the schools to enable students in the county to continue their learning.“I don’t understand why schools have remained closed while others in other areas are continuing with classes. There are too many security officers, perhaps more than the residents here, but still no teachers,” said Nuri, as quoted by the daily. The residents have pointed an accusing finger at the national government, arguing it has neglected the region for years, a move they say has made teachers flee the county due to security concerns.
