Former Kakamega Senator Dr Boni Khalwale has given a warning over the new male contraceptive pill.
According to Khalwale, it is still premature for the pill to be introduced in the Kenyan market citing that the pill causes chemical castration.
In a tweet on Friday, the former legislator and doctor by profession has called on men to be alert on the new drug.
"It is extremely premature for this pill to be introduced into the Kenyan market, or any market whatsoever. In short, the pill causes chemical castration! Beware," tweeted Khalwale.
In a report given out by scientists who developed the drug, the pill known as dimethandrolone undecanoate or DMAU is not harmful to the sex drive of men.
"There was no significant change in mood. Daily oral administration with food of DMAU for 28 days in young healthy men is well tolerated. The promising results support further development of DMAU as a single agent oral male contraceptive pill," read the report as quoted by The Standard.
The pill works by suppressing testosterone hormone to castrate level thereby impeding the production of sperms. This means men can consider the pill over the vasectomy procedure that has always been considered by men to take up family planning.
