The County Government of Mombasa through the Department of Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries is distributing certified hybrid maize seeds to over 1,500 farmers across the County.
Through a communication, Governor Ali Hassan Joho said the maize seeds are drought and pest resistant and mature within a short span of three months.
This is after the county government ploughed over 300 acres of land as well as trained famers on best farming methods in order to reduce losses brought about by poor farming practices and maximize their yield.
On Thursday, Joho said the farming subsidy programme aims at empowering famers and promoting food security for for the county residents.
The move comes days after Kwale and Kilifi county governments distributed certified seeds to farmers across the counties.
The County government of Kwale purchased 128 Metric Tonnes of certified maize seeds for farmers from all the 20 wards at the cost of Sh28.8 million.
Governor Salim Mvurya said the county government's target is to have 800 beneficiaries per ward, to get 8Kgs.
"Our 42 tractors are now busy in the shambas, we also have agricultural extension officers who monitor the ploughing and will also monitor the planting. This is part of our efforts to ensure that our county is food secure," he disclosed.
The County government is also putting up dams for micro irrigation farming.
On the other hand, The County government of Kilifi says it is taking giant steps to modernize agriculture and turn it into a lucrative business and make the County food sufficient.
This is after the county government launched the Kilifi County Farm Input distribution programme in March.
Leading the exercise, Kilifi Deputy Governor Eng. Gideon Edmund Saburi was flanked by several County Executive Committee Members.
He said the programme would see thousands of farmers from across the County get free certified seeds, fertilizers and other farm input from the County government to increase their production.
