[Photo|Anyang Nyong'o]The County government of Kisumu in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is set to set up a milk cooling plant in Muhoroni sub-county. The plant aims at enhancing dairy farming in Kisumu County, targeting Nyabondo in Nyakach and Nyahera in Kisumu West sub-counties. Governor Prof Anyang' Nyong'o alongside his Deputy Dr Ochieng' Owili will lead the ground breaking ceremony early next week. During a meeting with stakeholders on Monday, Nyong'o said Kisumu has a population estimate of one million people with an area cover of 2086Km2"Currently Kisumu produces 26 million kilograms of milk annually yet it has an annual consumption demand of 70 million kilograms. Exotic breeds and their crosses give 60% and 40% from the indigenous."Dairy farming is a paramount source of livelihood to many Kenyans as it contributes 4.5 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product.Smallholders farmers produce 80 per cent of the national milk as 20 per cent come from large scale farmers.
