Nyali MP Hezron Awiti's gubernatorial bid for Mombasa county has received a major boost just days to the next general elections, following a resolution by Muslim clerics to support his candidature.
In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the lawmaker and more than 2,000 Imams and Madrassa teachers in Mombasa, Awiti is expected to a social services docket in the county government to the group, should he clinch the seat.
The MoU is likely to see Muslim religious leaders in the Coastal county rally behind Awiti.
The legislator is expected to vie on his Vibrant Democratic Party (VDP) ticket, after he dumped Wiper Party just days to the party primaries held in April.
He will be facing off with the incumbent governor Ali Hassan Joho (ODM), Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar (Wiper) and Jubilee's Suleiman Shabhal.
