Five groups from five sub-counties in Kisii County are earmarked to benefit from the Kisii County government's fish feeds processing machines.
The development is part of the efforts to reduce the cost of fish production and ensure farmers earn better returns from their fish farming investments.
Kisii County Director of Fisheries Edwin Muga disclosed that already the groups drawn from Bobasi, Bonchari, Bomachoge Borabu, Kitutu Chache North and South Mugirango sub-counties have been identified awaiting training on the implementation of the project.
Speaking to this writer on Thursday in his office, Muga clarified that the machines acquired by the Kisii County government are yet to be distributed to the groups since they have not been trained on feed processing and entrepreneurship skills.
"The Kisii County government has already acquired fish feeds processing machines to be distributed to the five groups which have been identified from the five sub-counties across the county as part of the county government's efforts to scale down the cost of fish production and ensure farmers earn high returns from their fish farming ventures," stated Muga.
Muga clarified that the county government's initiative was driven by the fish feeds challenge facing commercial fish farmers in the region, scaring many potential fish farmers from venturing into fish farming as an agri-business venture.
He however, encouraged local community members to embrace fish diets which he said were not only nutritious but also affordable since one fish averagely costs Sh300 in the local market.
