Embattled Garissa Governor Nathif Jama has received backing from Muslim clerics in the county rejuvenating his energy as he seeks a second term in office.
Led by Mohamed Gedi, the leaders said Jama, for the last five years had strived to unite Garissa residents.
The endorsement is important because the clerics command respect among Garissa residents majority of whom are Muslims.
“On behalf of my fellow clerics, we have unanimously agreed to support the governor. We will reach out to our people to re-elect him,” said Gedi.
Jama is currently fighting off corruption allegations following reports that his back account had been frozen with Sh5 billion wired from the Central Bank.
An article published recently by the Sunday Nation claimed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission had asked High Court to freeze Jama’s account at First Community Bank South C branch.
In a letter dated July 5 which made rounds on social media, however, EACC through its chief executive Halakhe Wako said the anti-corruption agency was not the source of the Sunday Nation report.
“The commission therefore deeply regrets the anxiety and frustration this has caused and strongly assures you it will remain impartial, fair and Just in carrying out constitutional mandate,” the letter read in part.
Jama had earlier on denounced EACC saying: “It is unfortunate independent institutions can stoop low and are now being used by self-seeking politicians to harass their opponents whom they see as their threat. This trend should be stopped,” he said.
