The area’s governorship race is likely to take a different twist after Bernard Kiilu's running mate Peter Kioko opted to drop from the contest.

Kioko has also confirmed his resignation from the Liberal Democratic Party, citing confusion and frustration from the gubernatorial aspirant.

He also said that he realized that he was backing an aspirant who stands the minimal chances of winning the seat.

"Along the way, I realised the team I was following was shrouded by uncertainty, hopelessness, secrecy, disorganization, unpreparedness, unfaithfulness and individualism," he said, as quoted by Star.

In his defense, Kiilu claimed that the aspirant had requested for payment," I tried unsuccessfully to meet Kioko to settle the matter. He didn't show up. This confirms he is malicious," he added.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr has, however, said that all is not lost since Kiilu still has an opportunity to name another running mate since names are yet to be gazetted.

"The names of governor aspirants and their deputies are yet to be gazetted." The incumbent is banking on his performance record and support of Wiper to retain the seat.
