Maraga trounced several other notable names among them US-based don Prof Makau Mutua and Supreme Court Judge Smokin Wanjala in a highly contested battle to replace Willy Mutunga who retired in June.

And on Friday, senior counsel Okongo Omogeni triggered the debate by challenging all Nyamira MPs to support the name once it is tabled in Parliament.

‘We are very lucky to have Maraga nominated as head of the Judiciary. This is a blessing since it just comes based on his intellectual ability. It’s my humble plea that MPs should support it,” he said.

His sentiments were backed by area woman representative Okongo Omogeni who said she will ensure the name gets support across the political divide.

“Maraga was nominated on a competent basis and as an MP; I will rally for his support once the name is tabled in the National Parliament. He is qualified and I am right behind him,” she said.

“I have known Maraga for quite a while and I am sure he will deliver. We are only waiting for the name to be tabled in Parliament and we approve it and that is our stand as Nyamira leaders,” added West Mugirango MP James Gesami.

Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire warned against politicising the nomination insisting that Maraga is genuinely qualified.

“It’s not Cord or Jubilee has nominated him. He faced a panel and I am happy he excelled. No one should chest thump that he or she made the name go through,” he said.
