Pyrethrum farmers in Nyamira have every reason to smile after the county government announced a mega plan to boost the production of the crop.

Majority of the farmers who once grew the crop pulled out of farming after it lost market.

Speaking on Tuesday at Nyamusi during a funds drive, Governor John Nyagarama said the county government will start giving interested farmers pyrethrum seedlings in a bid to revive farming of the crop.

He said the crop now fetches high prices in the world market and encouraged more people to start cultivating it.

“Pyrethrum farming was the backbone of this region in terms of supporting our economy," Nyagarama said.

"My government will start giving those willing free seedlings as a way of introducing the crop in the region again."

He however told farmers still growing tea not to abandon the crop.

“One can possess up to three or four cash crops in a farm and that is why I strongly advice against uprooting tea as some of you want to do," he added.

"Both cash crops are vital and there is need to grow all of them."
