A day after the National Parliament expunged a controversial party hopping clause proposed by joint parliamentary committee on IEBC reforms, Borabu MP Ben Momanyi has hailed the august House as a visionary institution.
The clause which required politicians to remain in a particular party after losing nominations was meet with resistance from MPs even after Senators approved it.
And on Friday, Momanyi said the clause could have ‘interfered' with political rights of people and subsequently throwing the country into a state of anarchy.
“I want to thank the National Parliament for being a visionary institution. We could not allow very divisionary clauses to throw this country into a state of anarchy. We are a democratic nation,” he said.
He added: “maybe the best think we should have done is coming with legislations that guide free and fair party primaries. The nominations have never been fair regardless of the political party. If the clause was passed, people would have been denied their favorite leaders,” he added.
The Wiper MP reportedly beat his opponent in the Borabu ODM nominations in 2013 and was denied the ticket before joining the Wiper party where he squarely beat his opponent.
The National Parliament on Thursday amended the clause before adopting the IEBC report that would see key changes in the country’s electoral system.
