Barely a week after the national commemoration of Nobel Laureate Prof Wangari Maathai at Karura forest, youths from Borabu in honoured her by planting over 1000 trees in Mogusii Forest.

The event, which was organised by Nyamira Youth Forum brought together over 100 youths who have been championing for democracy and good government in the region.

The Wednesday’s event that was spearheaded by the group’s chairman Mr Danson Ondieki will be practiced annually as a way of appreciating nature and environment which the Late Wangari treasured much.

The youths also challenged the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to come up with stiff regulations that will see apprehension of powerful people believed to be spearheading lumbering activities in major forests.

“We came here to honour Prof Maathai. She was a global icon and represented us at the global stage. We want to live with her principles of doing something small in the society. We want the ministry of environment to respond swiftly to arrest those coordination lumbering actives especially at Nyamiranga forest,” Ondieki said.

The youths urged the county government of Nyamira to set aside funds for environmental conservation which will see many youths getting employed to take care of the environment.

“Our environment is quickly degrading because no one seems to care. The county government should set aside funds that can be used to employ youths who will be engaging in activities of conserving environment by planting trees,” he added.

They further urged the Green Belt movement that was started by Ms. Maathai to extend its serves to the county level and partner with county governments for the sake of carrying out civic education on the importance of environmental conservation.
