The elders agreed that their livestock herders would graze together in the next five months due to the current drought in an effort to promote peaceful coexistence between the two communities.

The Somali herders will, however, be required to vacate the grazing zones upon the expiry of the five months allocated for free grazing.

The agreement was reached when senior community members and security officials from the two counties met in Eldera along the Isiolo-Garissa borders following heightened tension over water and pasture that had threatened to spark off violence.

Just weeks ago, elders from the two warring communities had unsuccessfully convened meetings to resolve the water and pasture issues. While presiding over the Wednesday negotiations, Lagdera Deputy County Commissioner, Jackson Olechuta and Isiolo County Commissioner, George Natembeya assured the communities that security would be beefed up along the border.
