Over a hundred residents of Kuura village in Bosamaro ward, Nyamira County received treatment courtesy of mobile clinic that was recently donated by First Lady Margret Kenyatta.
The exercise targeted women and children with an aim to reduce child and maternal deaths, which are reportedly on the rise in the country.
Chief Health Officer Douglas Bosire on Wednesday said the exercise will cover all the 20 wards in a rotation basis, and challenged local leadership to work with his docket to reach more people.
“I am very happy with the turn out today. The department of health is determined to ensure maternal deaths and child deaths are drastically reduced. This is possible because the mobile clinic enables our staff to access people easily,” Bosire said.
“I would like to urge local leadership to work with us so that we can reach more people. They are always in touch with the masses so their support is important. We are reaching out all wards on a rotational basis,” Bosire added.
Local residents led by Judith Kemunto hailed the department of health for organising the event, but challenged the county government to improve its ambulance services.
“We are happy as locals because many of us face inevitable challenges such as accessing health facilities. The mobile clinic has solved some our problems and hope the exercise will be done in a continuous basis,” she said.
“However, as locals, we still have concerns about the ambulance services. Many patients die in their homes at night due to inability to get quick transportation means. We want the county government to respond to emergencies by providing quick ambulance services,” she added.
According to Bosire, the mobile clinic will only target interior parts of the county which have scarcity of medical centers.
