The couple is accused of refusing to seek medical attention for the baby opting for prayers.

They are said to have refused to take the boy to hospital despite the deteriorating health condition of the infant as they continued to pray for him at home.

The couple, according to neighbours, worships at the Church of God which does not believe in members seeking treatment in hospital.

It also emerged during their arrest that the boy is the third child the family has lost due to such negligence.

Kinungi is said to have tens of faithfuls who worship in the Church (Kanitha Wa Ngai) which does not believe in the use of hospital medicine to contain diseases.

The first to be arrested was the mother of the deceased boy after she went to the area chief to obtain a burial permit.

Area chief Simon Ng'ang'a said incidents of child neglect are on the rise in the area.

"We have arrested the husband and the wife in connection with the death and we are waiting for a postmortem report to determine if the death was caused by negligence," he told a local media.

He added: "In the past the family had lost two other minors after ailing and it has emerged that this is due to negligence and they will be charged in court."
