A class 3 pupil died on Saturday after a sand quarry collapsed in Keera, Gesusu area Kisii County.

The boy was at the site with two other children helping a man who was working.

The deceased, Denis Mose aged 9 was sent by his mother Zipporah Kemunto to a shop when a worker at the site John Begi, told the children to help him dig out sand.

When they started scooping sand, the quarry collapsed and fell on them, killing the minor on the spot.

Villagers rescued the two other children and rushed them to Gesusu sub-county Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses said the quarry’s edges were weak due to heavy rains experienced in the area.

Julius Tinega, Kisii County Disaster Director urged residents working at quarries to be alert to avoid unnecessary deaths.

About 8 months ago another man died at the same spot.

The boy's body was taken to a Kisii hospital mortuary.
