An education official in Witu division, Lamu County has voiced concern over the low attendance of boys in schools.

Witu education officer James Akello said Monday the boys were dropping out of school in favour of casual jobs, while others were engaging in crime.According to The Star, Akello said the boys are leaving school to become boda boda riders, mandazi sellers and bus conductors, among others. He added that others were taking drugs and even committing crimes.“The girls are doing so well and their education has improved by 70 per cent. It has taken much effort which has paid off. Now let’s do the same for boys who are obviously lost,” Akello said. The official now wants action taken to address the matter.“They will soon become a thorn in our own flesh if we don’t look into what is ailing them,” he added.
