The weatherman says that there will be high nighttime and daytime temperatures as dry weather hits in two weeks time. [Photo/theportugalnews.com]Nairobi and Central region residents should not be perturbed by the increasing temperatures as that will be the case in the next few months. The meteorological department has predicted that temperatures are likely to continue rising as we approach January where dry weather will hit most parts of the country as the rainy season ends. The head of Meteorological Department Peter Ambenje also says that only the South Coast and parts of the Southern half of the country, particularly bordering Tanzania, will experience rainfall later this week.“The January-February 2018 period is expected to be sunny and dry, with very high daytime and night-time temperatures that will mainly increase over most areas,” Ambenje says in this week's forecast as he warns that Northern Kenya is expected to remain dry.According to Ambenje, the dry weather is expected to usher in a harsh January leading to poor crop performance this season.
Two weeks ago the weatherman advised that contingency measures be enhanced to avert any deaths due to lack of food and water in the hot January-February period.
Last week, the Agriculture ministry warned that prices of common foods will remain higher than in the recent five-year averages through March 2018 because of scanty rains.
The ministry predicted that wholesale maize prices between October 2017–May 2018 in Nairobi would remain at 21-27 percent above average, ranging between Sh3,400–Sh3,900 for a 90kg sack.
