[Photo|Courtesy]A good amount of the taxpayer's money was used to prepare and conduct the August 8 general election, but it remains unclear how much, was used.The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) used billions of shillings to ensure several things were in place.Below is a breakdown of monies used by the IEBC, as first established by the Daily Nation. The amounts are approximate, and not exact monies used.1. Audit of the voters’ register - Sh160 million.2. Printing of ballot papers and statutory result declaration forms - Sh2.5 billion.3. Acquiring of the Kenya Integrated Elections Management System (KIEMS) kits to identify voters, capture and transmit scanned results forms - Sh5.2 billion.4. Pay 362,858 temporary staff who conducted the general election - at least Sh9,000 for each clerk.5. Strategic communications and media campaigns - one company Transcend Media Group, quoted Sh477.4 million; while another Scanad Kenya Ltd, quoted Sh764.4 million.Other services that IEBC used additional money include:6. Hiring of private transport companies to transport election materials to polling stations.7. Hiring of Postal Corporation of Kenya transport services to distribute election materials from its Nairobi’s Industrial Area warehouse to several parts of the country.8. Hiring of several private centres as polling and tallying centres, and the Bomas of Kenya as the national tallying centre.On September 1, the Supreme Court nullified IEBC's presidential election exercise over irregularities, announcing another presidential election in 60 days.This will also cost the taxpayer.
