In a thinly-veiled attack on the National Resistance Movement read in Mombasa, The Council of Imams and Preachers in Kenya has called on Kenyans to avoid engaging in acts that may lead to social strife.
The group hailed the victory of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto in the October 26 rerun.
Sheikh Muhammad Khalifa rattled off a list of countries plagued by political instability caused by resistance movements.
''As citizens of Kenya let's keep the peace because peace is what is we need in this country... We strongly condemn any resistance movement that wants to cause violence. Resistance movements that want power through unconstitutional means... resistance movements that can lead to the destruction of property and deaths... We the religious leaders condemn those things,'' Sheikh Muhammad said.
While the statement did not directly call NRM by name, it was clear who the statement was aimed at.
The statement comes in the aftermath of the declaration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the duly elected president in the October 26 rerun.
