The High Court in Malindi has extended the deadline for party nominations to Monday, May 1, 2017, Citizen Digital reports. 

This is after an NGO, Angaza Empowerment Network, filed a petition against Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), compelling the agency to extend the period, saying the April 26, deadline was unconstitutional. 

The petition was filed a day after IEBC through chairman Wafula Chebukati declined to push the deadline, and warned political parties to abide by the set deadline. 

Through Mbugua, Atudo and Macharia Advocates, the lobby group lodged the case Monday morning, before Justice Weldon Korir who certified the application as urgent.  

Justice Korir had directed the NGO to serve IEBC and Attorney General. 

Through its official George Miringu, the NGO said majority of Kenyans would be disenfranchised if the IEBC does not extend the timelines.  

Several political parties are rushing against time, to beat the deadline, by conducting primaries in several counties, same day.
