Police in Kisumu have reportedly shot dead one person and injuring several others as anti - election protests turned violent.
The South Nyanzan town has remained a major battle ground for few months now after opposition leader Raila Odinga called his supporters to boycott polls.
Prior to elections, the Amnesty International indicated that at least 35 people have been shot dead by the police in several opposition strongholds in anti - IEBC protests.
Ealier on Thursday, police boss Joseph Boinet defended the police from shooting allegations adding that the police force is committed to maintain law and order.
"Police ahve done their best to ensure the country is peaceful. Only few areas we are experiencing protests," said Boinet.
During his rally at Uhuru Park on Wednesday, Odinga urged his supporters to remain indoors during voting, a directive that has since been defied.
"I urge you to keep off the polling stations. Tell also your friends because the Jubilee thirsty regime wants to kill you," he said.
Suprisingly, Odinga's supporters have been captured engaging with police in running battles despite his order in several parts of Kisumu, Migori, Siaya and Homabay.
Voting is said to have been disrupted in several regions perceived to be opposition stronholds for the better part of Thursday.
The body of the middle aged man shot dead was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital while those injured were admitted in various health centers in Kisumu.
