Machakos police have nabbed 12,400 bags of suspected contraband sugar in Athi River, Machakos County.
The consignment was nabbed at Primarosa Flowers Company Limited stores on Monday.
Machakos county commissioner Matilda Sakwa said Kenya Revenue Authority officials were inspecting documents used by the company to import the sugar into the country.
According to Sakwa who addressed the press at the firm's premises during the crackdown on Monday, the sugar was allegedly imported from Brazil.
"Security agencies have nabbed 12,400 bags of sugar here at Primarosa Flower firm. We called in KEBS, KRA, and Anti-counterfeit authority to help with the verification," Sakwa said.
Sakwa said Kenya Bureau of Standard officers too were inspecting the consignment in a bid to determine whether the sugar is fit for human consumption.
She said her officers were curious why the consignment was kept in a flower company.
Sakwa said the sugar was imported into the country by one of the companies suspected to be involved in the importation of contraband sugar across the country, Express Kenya Limited.
"We were concerned why the sugar was kept in a flower company and was ordered by a company involved in the importation of contraband sugar. It's still yet to be determined whether its fit for human consumption," Sakwa said.
Sakwa said the sugar will continue to be held until investigations are over.
She said the place is cordoned off.
