Kisumu youths on Wednesday took to the streets to protest over alleged buying of National Identity cards of NASA supporters by Jubilee Party agents. The angry youths lit bonfires, barricading some roads within the central business district.
They chanted songs and engaged the police in running battles in protests against the alleged buying of ID cards by Jubilee Party agents in the region ahead of fresh October 17 presidential vote.
Police were forced to use teargas to disperse the charged crowds.
On Tuesday, MPs Jared Okello (Nyando) and Onyango Koyoo (Muhoroni) claimed that Jubilee sympathisers in the region have been buying IDs from residents and asked police to probe the matter.
They were backed by MCAs Ken Ooko (Ahero) and Maurice Ongeta (Awasi-Onjiko) at the press conference.
This came after reports that two people were arrested by a mob in Awasi and Ahero before being whisked away by police.
It is said the IDs attract between Sh1,000 to Sh5,000.
It is mandatory for one to have an ID card to vote.
