Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has nominated fiery lawyer Miguna Miguna to be his deputy.
In a letter to the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi, Sonko says Miguna meets all the requirements provided for in the constitution.
“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.
Polycarp Igathe, then Sonko's deputy, resigned four months ago, citing lack of trust from his boss.
Igathe was on Tuesday appointed Equity Bank's Chief Commercial Officer.
The unexpected nomination comes a few hours after Miguna, who was deported by the government to Canada in March, canceled his planned return into the country.
"I was determined to arrive home on schedule, however, just before my departure, I reluctantly canceled my flight to Nairobi and postponed my next arrival date. We will provide you with my new arrival date as soon as the court gives further directions on this matter," said Miguna on Wednesday in a statement.
Miguna has always described Governor Sonko as "unfit to hold public office", accusing him of engaging in illegal activities.
During last year's general election campaign period, the self-declared NRM general said he cannot work with the Jubilee Party governor.
