Fifteen (15) continuing students at the University of Nairobi were on Tuesday expelled even as the institutions’ administration fight claims of ‘illegally’ allowing police to brutalize students last week.
A video clip, which interior Cabinet Secretary John Matiang’i has since dismissed as ‘grossly exaggerated’ showed police descending on students for allegedly participating in illegal demos.
And a moment after a night vigil in protest to police executions, university senate suspended students who are believed to be architects of the demonstrations in defense of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
“The following students remain expelled following the Senate’s decision.” Read a statement, signed by Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi.
Sadly, the woes of the affected students do not end there since the police have instructed them to report to the nearest police station in 24 – hour’s time.
“The police would like to inform the below expelled students from the University of Nairobi to report to OCS, Central Police Station in 24 – hrs time,” read the notice.
The students are charged with malicious damage of property and gang rape in the university among other offences. The institution has since been closed indefinitely.
