Cases of bribery were allegedly reported during the Kabete parliamentary by-elections that were held today.
One of the candidates vying for the seat claimed that more than 10 polling stations across the sub county have continued to issue bribes to the voters to vote for a certain candidate.
He alleged that the voters are given between Sh200 and 500 at the gate of the polling stations in question, to influence their preference on a certain influential candidate.
“We have witnessed this incidence in more than 10 polling stations. Some of them include Karura ka Nyungu Academy, Kirangari primary and Uthiru Nursery. We have reported a case of four women giving out some money to the voters at Karura Ka Nyungu and the police have intervened,” he alleged.
He also reported that some people are giving out some forms to the voters to sign, which lobby for ousting of the governor William Kabogo.
“Once you go inside the polling station, you are given a form to sign then you are given between Sh200-500. The forms are recommending the removal of the governor and we suspect this has to do with one of the candidates,” claimed Isaiah Ndirangu, a candidate.
However, Muthoni Wangai, a returning officer in one of the polling stations confirmed the claims and clarified that only one case of bribery of voters was reported and handled immediately, and directed those with such claims to report to the relevant authorities for immediate action to be taken.
“We have 92 polling stations across the constituency. One incident in one station does not represent the rest of the polling stations. The elections were credible and we assure the constituents that we will ensure fairness to the end,” she added.
