President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 nominated Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki, as the Attorney General, replacing Prof Githu Muigai who resigned on the same day.
"I have received with regret the resignation of Attorney General Prof. Githu Muigai. I thank him for his service for the last six and a half years. I have nominated as his replacement Judge Paul Kihara Kariuki," Uhuru tweeted, on Tuesday afternoon.
Before his nomination, Kariuki was the head of the Appellate Court.
He served as the Chancellor of the Anglican Church of Kenya from 1980, until in 2001 when he became a judge.
Born in May 11, 1954 (to the late Anglican Church Bishop Obadiah Kariuki and Lilian Wairimu the daughter of senior chief Koinange) in Kiambu, Justice Paul Kihara Kariuki schooled at the University of Nairobi for his Bachelor of Law Degree and graduated in 1977.
Between 1977 and 1980 he was a Legal assistant at Hamilton Harrison and Matthews in Nairobi and a partner in the same firm between 1981 and 1986.
Since 2000, Kariuki was the Group managing director at International Controls Group of Companies He was one of the judges appointed as judges of the High Court by then President Kibaki in October 2003.
He became the duty judge at the High Court, replacing Justice Isaac Lenaola who had been appointed a member of the tribunal to investigate judges who chose to contest their removal from the bench.
Justice Paul Kihara Kariuki was to hold the position of duty judge for the next two years.
In 2009, Chief Justice Evans Gicheru appointed Justice Kariuki to head the newly established Judicial Training Institute (JTI) that was to address the training needs of the Judiciary.
Justice Kariuki got married to Sarah Njoki Kimingi Kariuki on September 4, 1976, and got three children - Marion Wairimu Kariuki, Zazira Njeri Kariuki and Andrew Kariuki.
