Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has pledged to help provide financial support to locals engaging in poultry farming.

Mandago who spoke at Kamagut, Turbo sub-county during the launch of the first ever chicken auction in the country said his administration will sensitize and assist those involved in the sale of chicken to join cooperatives movement to enable them to access cheap loans.

The governor pointed out that poultry farming has the potential of helping fight poverty among locals most of who depend on maize farming.

“On a daily basis, half a million shillings rotates around Kambi Kuku, Jua Kali and Kambi Nyasi which is a clear indication that chicken rearing can help reduce poverty level,” he said.

The county boss also challenged the national government to consider setting aside funds that will help set up a slaughterhouse and a cooler to enable those involved in the chicken business to preserve them as they seek for better prices.

“These farmers need to do value chain addition and this is why I am requesting that we have a slaughtering facility and cooling storage for our farmers,” said Mandago.

Deputy President William Ruto presided over the opening of the chicken auction which he said will be an annual event.

“This auction will help in fulfilling the Jubilee big four agenda of enhancing food security and manufacturing. Besides addressing food security, this will assist in manufacturing and be employing more youths,” he added.
