Kisumu residents have requested Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to bring back their snake Omieri after it was transferred to the national government.
Following the death of Omieri in 1987 at the Nairobi Snake Park, the locals claim that the national Government has short-changed them by holding back the deadly reptile.
The residents noted that the snake belongs to them as their predecessors protected and fed it so that it would bring good fortune and luck to the community.
They want remains of Omieri brought back to Kisumu Museum so that local and international tourists can view it and earn the county money.
“The national government has been benefiting from our very own Omieri snake and we also want to benefit from it since it belongs to us. We are the owners and have the right to own it,” said Mariah Ateya a resident of Kisumu.
Other residents noted that the snake was their heritage and asked Nyong'o to facilitate its return.
“We ask our Governor Anyan’g Nyong’o to bring back the snake so that we can also have our pride back,” stated Brian Odhiambo.
“We have our own museum and we can’t travel all the way to Nairobi to see Omieri yet she belongs to us,” another resident opined.
