Police spokesperson Charles Owino has said that anti-riot officers who allegedly used excessive force during Cord Monday anti-IEBC protests will be dealt with individually.

Owino who spoke during an Interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday night said that investigations into the conduct of the police during the protests is already underway.

He said action will be taken against officers who will be found culpable of using excessive force.

The Police Spokesperson said that there are independent offices within the police force that handle complaints against the conduct of the police.

“The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Police Unit are already looking into the matter,” he said.

Owino said that police officers did what they had to do to contain the protests. He stated that there are various ways through which police use to contain protests.

He clarified that no police officer has a right to use excessive force on protesters especially when the protestors are not armed adding that major police reforms are still going on in the force.

Owino said that the reforms seek to train police officers and equip them with skills and knowledge to handle major issues in their line of duty.

There have been calls from a section of Kenyans and human rights activists for action to be taken against police officers who were capture beating and assaulting protesters during the Monday Cord protests.

On Tuesday IPOA and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) said that they have launched investigations into the Monday protests to establish on whether police used excessive force.
